Baptism

Baptism

Have you obeyed the teaching of Jesus about baptism? Just before Jesus ascended into Heaven, he gave this command to anyone who desires to follow Him, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:18-19).

Jesus commands that all who decide to follow Him be baptized as the one identifiable mark of becoming a disciple of Jesus. Jesus and His first followers taught and practiced baptism by immersion in water. It is a drama where we reenact the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. This is defined in the Bible clearly in Romans 6:1-6.

If you are a follower of Jesus who has already obeyed the teaching about baptism, your first command is to “Go!” and make other followers, that is, disciples, of Jesus. A disciple is a follower of a discipline taught by the one they follow. To be a follower of Jesus is to obey His teachings.

You’ll notice that not all are called to be a missionary in a foreign country where the people know very little about Jesus. However, we all have been called to invite other people to follow Jesus as we go about our daily lives. No doubt you know someone in your circle of influence who is not a follower of Jesus. Pray for them and ask God to give you an opportunity to start the conversation of who Jesus is.
